What you'll do

A scenic and rewarding full-day ride from Arrowtown back to Queenstown via the Twin Rivers Trail. Covering 36 km of varied terrain, this self-guided adventure includes riverside trails, historic bridges, and stunning alpine views. Best suited to confident riders with good fitness. E-bikes recommended for a more relaxed experience.
  • 37km – 4+ Hours riding time
  • Hilly, Techy Terrain
  • For the expert riders

This self-guided ride is designed for experienced riders with a high level of fitness. Covering 37 km of off-road trail, it combines sections of flowing Grade 2-3 riding with more advanced Grade 4 terrain, including steep climbs, technical switchbacks, exposed edges, and rough surfaces – particularly around the Hugo Tunnel and Arthurs Point.

Expect to spend 3.5 to 4.5 hours on the bike, depending on your pace and fitness level. This ride is not recommended for beginners or casual riders.

E-bikes are strongly recommended for a more comfortable and enjoyable experience, especially if you’d like to conserve energy for the technical sections.

Shuttle Times & Trail Planning

  • Summer (September-April): Shuttle departs Queenstown at 9:00 am (check-in by 8:50 am)
  • Winter (May-August): Shuttle departs at 10:00 am (check-in by 9:50 am)

The Queenstown shop closes at 5:00 pm in summer and 4:30 pm in winter, so you’ll need to manage your time carefully to avoid a late return. Riders who underestimate the terrain can take longer than expected – don’t get caught out.

What to Expect on the Trail

  • Three significant climbs in the middle of the ride – they’ll test your legs and your lungs
  • Steep descent and ascent around the Hugo Tunnel -a highlight, but also a challenge
  • Tight corners, narrow sections, and gravel surfaces – confidence and control are key
  • No wineries on this route – but you can stop for food or a drink at: – Canyon Brewing – Gantleys Tavern – Rakau Pizza (near Arthurs Point)

How Difficult Is This Ride?

This is one of the more technically demanding routes we offer. Although much of the trail is intermediate in grade, the Grade 4 sections require good bike handling skills, endurance, and confidence on variable terrain. If you’re not an experienced rider, we recommend choosing an easier route – or upgrading to an E-bike to help tackle the climbs.

What if the Weather Changes?

The trail passes through exposed alpine terrain, so weather conditions can change quickly. We assess the weather each morning, and if you’re unsure, feel free to call us 45 minutes to 1 hour before the shuttle departs. If the conditions are unsafe for riding, we’ll do our best to reschedule. If that’s not possible, we can offer a refund (minus a 3% transaction fee).
