Start your ride from central Queenstown and head toward The Boat Shed Café – a great place for coffee before the climb. Continue along the lakeside Frankton Track, past the Old Shotover Bridge, and across the Kimi-Ākau Suspension Bridge.
From there, the trail begins a steady climb through forested switchbacks, leading to the descent toward the Hugo Tunnel. This section includes Grade 4 technical corners, steep drop-offs, and narrow trail. Many riders choose to walk short sections here for safety.
After passing through the 108 m Hugo Tunnel, you’ll ride up to Arthurs Point, where you can stop for a drink or lunch at Gantley’s Tavern, Raku, or Canyon Brewing. From there, enjoy a mostly downhill 7.5 km ride back to Queenstown to complete the loop.
This is an advanced-level ride with sections rated Grade 4. It includes narrow trails, tight switchbacks, sharp drop-offs, and occasional obstacles like rocks or tree roots.
This ride is not suitable for beginners, less confident riders, or young children. Trailers and tag-alongs cannot be used due to the technical nature of the trail.
Before booking, riders should be comfortable with:
The trail passes through exposed alpine terrain, so weather conditions can change quickly. We assess the weather each morning, and if you’re unsure, feel free to call us 45 minutes to 1 hour before the shuttle departs. If the conditions are unsafe for riding, we’ll do our best to reschedule. If that’s not possible, we can offer a refund (minus a 3% transaction fee).

For a more relaxed and family-friendly experience, we recommend our Arrowtown to Gibbston ride – an easy 15 km journey through wine country with gentle trails and shuttle support.
We have 24″ or 26″ E-Bikes. Children must be at least 135 cm/4 ft 6″ tall and capable riders.
We have 16″, 20″, or 24″ bikes; or XS, S, M adult bikes.
We have either Child Trailers or Tag-A-Longs/Half-Bikes. Please be aware that tag-a-longs/half-bikes require balance and the skills to hold on independently.
Our preference is for infants to use Child Trailers. They are stable and safe, and can fit either two small infants (<20kg) or one larger infant (<40kg).
