The Kawarau Trail includes approximately 20 km of remote gorge riding with limited mobile reception and no vehicle access once you enter the gorge. Riders must be prepared to complete the full route. Please ensure you:
  • Are comfortable riding 34 km in a day
  • Have a moderate level of fitness
  • Carry sufficient water, food, sunscreen, and suitable clothing
  • Allow enough time to arrive at The Church Cellar Door for the 3:00pm return shuttle
All bikes are fitted with puncture-resistant tyres, and each group is provided with a puncture repair kit. For a more relaxed experience, especially through the gorge section, we recommend hiring an E-bike.

Is This Ride Suitable For Me?

This ride is best suited to confident riders who are comfortable cycling longer distances and tackling undulating terrain. Due to the remote gorge section and sustained riding distance, it is not recommended for young children or inexperienced riders. Confident teenagers may enjoy the challenge, particularly on E-bikes. Children hiring E-bikes must be at least 140 cm (4 ft 6 in) to fit our smallest frame. Families looking for a shorter or easier ride may prefer one of our Arrowtown or Gibbston Valley rides.

Weather

Central Otago weather can change quickly, and trail conditions are assessed on the day of departure. If conditions are unsafe, we’ll contact you to discuss rescheduling your booking or arranging a refund (less any applicable transaction fees). If you have concerns about the weather, call us one hour before the ride and we can run you through your options for the day.

Before You Ride

  • Dress in layers as alpine conditions can change quickly
  • Bring water, snacks, sunscreen, and suitable clothing
  • Allow time for scenic stops and photos
  • Consider hiring an E-bike for a more comfortable ride
  • Bring your camera – the Kawarau Gorge offers some of Central Otago’s most spectacular scenery
For full trail details, visit the official Kawarau Gorge Trail information page.
Please Note: The Kawarau Gorge,  The Big Day Out, Arrowtown to Queenstown and The Hugo Tunnel Loop rides are all not recommended  for children due to their distance and terrain.

Child Electric Bikes (8-14 years)

We have 24″ or 26″ E-Bikes. Children must be at least 135 cm/4 ft 6″ tall and capable riders.

Child Mountain Bikes (5-14 years)

We have  16″, 20″, or 24″ bikes; or XS, S, M adult bikes.

Infants (0-4 years)

We have either Child Trailers or Tag-A-Longs/Half-Bikes. Please be aware that tag-a-longs/half-bikes require balance and the skills to hold on independently.

Child Trailer

Our preference is for infants to use Child Trailers. They are stable and safe, and can fit either two small infants (<20kg) or one larger infant (<40kg).
