During the winter we suggest riding the Wharehuanui from Arrowtown to Queenstown. This 25 km self-guided route takes around 3–3.5 hours and showcases country side tracks, rolling farmland, alpine views, and the Shotover River. Please return your bike before our Searle Lane store closes (5pm in summer / 4:30pm in winter).

The trail is well-maintained gravel with some moderate climbs, making it ideal for confident riders with a reasonable level of fitness. For those wanting a more relaxed experience – especially on the hills –E-bikes are highly recommended.

Please note that on this ride there are some sections where you will be on the main road with cars, including the Edith Cavell Bridge (single lane road bridge), please take extra care.

Frankton Track diversion in place until the end of 2026 (approx. 4km). We suggest riding back via the Wharehuanui Trail to avoid the Frankton footpath.

Is This Ride Suitable For Me?

This ride is ideal for confident riders with a moderate level of fitness. The route includes three moderate climbs that are manageable for most riders, but an E-bike is recommended for a more relaxed and enjoyable experience.

Family Information

This ride is best suited to older children and confident young riders due to the distance and hills. Children hiring E-bikes must be at least 140 cm (4 ft 6 in) to fit our smallest frame. Infants can travel in trailers or on tag-alongs (subject to availability), although we generally recommend our Arrowtown to Gibbston ride for families with younger children.

Important Information

  • Some sections of the ride use public roads alongside vehicles.
  • Please take extra care when crossing the single-lane Edith Cavell Bridge.
  • A diversion is currently in place on the Frankton Track until approximately the end of 2026 (around 4 km). We recommend returning via the Wharehuanui Trail to avoid the Frankton footpath.
  • Bring water, snacks, sunscreen, and suitable clothing.
  • Weather conditions can change quickly in the Queenstown region.

Please Note: The Kawarau Gorge,  The Big Day Out, Arrowtown to Queenstown and The Hugo Tunnel Loop rides are all not recommended  for children due to their distance and terrain.

Child Electric Bikes (8-14 years)

We have 24″ or 26″ E-Bikes. Children must be at least 135 cm/4 ft 6″ tall and capable riders.

Child Mountain Bikes (5-14 years)

We have  16″, 20″, or 24″ bikes; or XS, S, M adult bikes.
