Want to ride the Kawarau Trail*?

The 30 km Kawarau Gorge Trail is a remote and spectacular ride through one of Central Otago’s most impressive landscapes.

Before setting off, please ensure you:

  • Are comfortable riding 30 km in a day
  • Have a moderate level of fitness
  • Carry water, snacks, sunscreen, and suitable clothing
  • Arrive at Carrick Winery in time for your return shuttle

Important

  • Limited mobile reception is available through the gorge
  • There is no vehicle access once you enter the gorge
  • Your vehicle remains parked at our Gibbston Bike Hub
  • Our bikes are fitted with puncture-resistant tyres, and a repair kit is provided

For a more comfortable ride, we recommend hiring an E-bike.

Central Otago weather can change quickly, so dress in layers and be prepared for changing conditions.

*Please note – if you choose to ride the Kawarau Trail, there will be a mandatory levy of $5 per person on top of our hire prices

Hard-Tail Bike Hire: Cromwell

Weather event: 28/8/26

Heavy rain has caused some damage to the Queenstown Trail between Arrowtown and Arrow Junction.

For the next few days, Bike The Wineries – Full Day and Arrowtown to Gibbston will start around 7km beyond Arrowtown, closer to the wineries, avoiding the damaged section. You’ll miss Arrowtown, but the ride itself is as good as ever!
